Made Tea is graded according
to the size of the broken or curled leaf, mainly into the following
grades:
PF1 (Pekoe Fannings 1), BP1 (Broken
Pekoe 1) BP (Broken Pekoe) PD (Pekoe Dust) D (Dust) FNGS (Fannings)
BMF (Broken Mixed Fannings)
The demand for these different grades is greatly influenced
by what the consumer intends to use the tea for. For example,
a blender packing in tea bags will prefer Broken Pekoe (BP1)
Pekoe Dust (PD) and Dust (D), because these infuse much faster
than the other grades such as Pekoe Fannings 1 (PF1) or FNGS.
The tea is offered for sale to buyers in lots of uniform
quantity known as invoices. This implies that two teas of
the same grade hit with different quality standards will be
presented at the auction as different lots.
Prices of tea are mainly determined on the auction market
through the usual supply and demand factors, there is no reserve
price on the auction. However, the Broker who is the middleman
between the producer and the buyer, values the tea, just to
give the buyer an indication of market conditions. Prices
within a grade vary quite a lot and this is attributed to
quality.
