Uganda Tea Development Agency

Your true partner in the tea industry

UTDAL Background

UTDAL was conceived out of the realization that ownership of means of production and effective management are not necessarily synonymous. Previously the smallholder tea factories were managed by the European Union funded Agri-Industrial Management Agency Ltd. (AGRIMAG) under the Small-holder Tea Development Programme (STDP), with the realization that STDP was coming to an end in October 2001 which would leave a management vacuum, the Directors of Kayonza and Igara took a decision to combine their effort and share the cost of management of their factories. This would not only give them the advantage of the reduced cost of management, efficiency, marketing and branding but importantly it would offer them advantages that accrue to collective bargaining.

As an agency, UTDAL is charged with provision of professional management services in following areas;

  • Sales & Marketing
  • Administration and Secretariat
  • Manufacturing
  • Financial Management
  • Maintenance & Engineering

UTDAL has over the years amassed expertise and experience in tea development & management that we intend to leverage on and play a larger role in the growth of the tea industry in Uganda.

The management agency employs a cross section of well-trained and experienced staff to run the Factories in order to guarantee the quality of black tea supplied to the market. It is headed by a Chief Executive Officer (C.E.O) assisted by other managers in planning, Administration management, Finance, Procurement and Marketing. The Management staff is seconded to the factories where they are based. Each factory is headed by a General Manager, assisted by six heads of Departments to manage the factory operations.
